When journey maps lie politely

Journey maps often freeze the moment they look polished. Teams celebrate the workshop, print the poster, and quietly ignore the messy seams between CRM automations and paid social refreshes. We treat that polish as a risk, not an achievement. In our studios we add a "handoff heat" layer: color strokes only where two owners disagree on who responds within 24 hours. The goal is not blame but visibility. When heat clusters around assisted channels, we schedule a short parliament session instead of another generic alignment meeting. The practice is imperfect. Some organizations refuse to mark heat publicly, and we respect that by using numbered codes instead of names. Even then, the conversation shifts from aesthetics to operational reality, which is the entire point for omnichannel targeting work.
